GeForce NOW quells PC envy by bringing high-powered gaming to Mac

Apple Macs aren’t usually associated with gaming, often finding many titles incompatible with the operating system. Nvidia is attempting to change that by adapting its GeForce NOW service to take care of everything at cloud level, resulting in a pain-free gaming experience on the Mac.

GeForce NOW turns most Mac into a virtual GeForce gaming PC, rendering games with its Pascal architecture to give the performance of a GeForce GTX 1080. By utilising a cloud system, games are at the ready with no wait times for downloads, updates or patches.

Of course, since this is a streaming service, a good internet connection is required. Nvidia recommends a minimum of 25 Mb/s download speed, with a recommended 50 Mb/s for optimal gaming. Macs that pre-date 2009 or MacOS 10.10 likely won’t meet the requirements needed for GeForce NOW, but you can check here to see if your model makes the cut.

At launch, GeForce NOW supports just over 100 titles, from brand new games such as The Evil Within 2, Total War: Warhammer II and Middle-earth: Shadow of War to multiplayer titles like League of Legends, Overwatch and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Some of these titles have yet to be optimised, meaning that players might need to tweak the in-game graphical settings to suit their need, however the ones which are optimised “are playable at max settings with smooth framerates.”

Mac owners simply need to register, download and install the GeForce NOW app and select the games that they already own from their Steam and Battle.net library. PC owners need not despair if the thought of GeForce NOW suits them, as it will also be launching on the platform. Currently both versions are still in beta, with a waitlist for countries that don't yet have support.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the service, however it is confirmed that users will need to own the games supported by the platform.
