Various leaks reveal details on Intel’s 9th Gen i7/i5/i3 CPUs and Core i9 for laptops

There has been a wealth of Intel news over the last few weeks and that doesn't seem to be slowing down just yet. This week, sources have come out with information on Intel's upcoming 9th Generation desktop processors, as well as details on what's next for Intel's mobile CPUs.

We already know that AMD is planning a Ryzen refresh for 2018, but what does Intel have up its sleeve to combat it? According to Taiwanese motherboard sources speaking with HKEPC, Intel's 9th Generation desktop CPUs will bring upgrades across the board. For starters, the report claims that the Core i7 9700K will be bumped up to 8C/16T, meanwhile the Core i5 is said to finally receive Hyper Threading. According to the source, Intel's Core i5 9600K will stick to six cores, but thanks to the addition of hyper threading, it will also have 12 threads. Some new Core i3 models may also have hyper threading included, bumping them up to 4C/8T.

These are claimed to be ‘Cannonlake' processors set to launch in the second half of next year. These are very early reports, so do treat this as rumor, rather than a confirmed fact.

Aside from that, the latest update for AIDA64 has also revealed the names of some upcoming Intel processors. The most interesting of which is the Core i9-8950K, which will be Intel's first Core i9 laptop processor based on the Coffee Lake architecture. It will come with six cores and twelve threads, while also being overclockable, assuming the laptop's cooling system can keep the temperatures down.

Elsewhere in the patch notes, we also see mentions of new Pentium Gold CPUs, Coffee Lake powered Xeon processors and a number of Core i7 8th Gen laptop processors.

KitGuru Says: As exciting as the 9th Gen desktop processor report seems, we are still pretty far out from its release, so take the information with a pinch of salt. Are any of you currently planning your next PC build?  Would you like to see Hyper Threading finally come to the Core i5 lineup?

  1. My take? Consider any Intel purchases from now on to be one off’s! Likely every new release will require a new Motherboard upgrade.

  2. i9 for lapops at 45w? ok lets go and buy an asus GL702ZC ryzen 8 core laptop. In multithreaing will remain faster.

  3. I5 with hyper threading

Expect another £30-40 on the price then

  4. Give us more PCIe lanes – PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  5. W is directly related to power. X cores is a multiplier. 65w not giving you what you want.

  6. The point is that Ryzen is faster.

  7. Take cooling more seriously for laptops. It sucks that laptops are useless when either Graphics, CPU or mobo breaks. Add 100 grams for cooling or whatever, laptops are too expensive to break after four years.
