Apple is being sued over the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus dual-camera design

It looks like Apple has another legal matter to add to its ever growing pile of lawsuits. This time around, an Israeli company is suing Apple, claiming that the dual-cameras featured on the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 8 Plus infringe on four patents in total.

Corephotonics is the plaintiff in this case. The Israel-based firm focusses on dual-camera lens technology and as such, has several patents relating to dual-camera designs. According to the complaint, Corephotonics reached out to Apple back when it was first starting up in an attempt to form a partnership. The two companies were in talks for a while but never ended up penning a licensing agreement.

The lawsuit also alleges that Apple's lead contract negotiator told Corephotonics that “even if Apple infringed, it would take years and millions of dollars in litigation” before they would have to pay any money. From there, Corephotonics learned that the 2016 iPhone 7 would be using a dual-camera design.

The patents Apple has allegedly infringed on were filed between 2012 and 2015. Two of them pertain to mini telephoto lens assembly, another focusses on dual aperture zoom digital cameras and the final patent pertains to high resolution thin multi-aperture imaging systems.

As you would expect, the plaintiff is seeking monetary compensation for damages and legal fees.

KitGuru Says: Apple is no stranger to the court room at this point. Though there is no guarantee that this case will go to trial. If what Corephotonics is saying turns out to be true, then Apple could end up with a hefty damages bill.
