Star Wars Battlefront II struggles at retail during its first week

There has been plenty of drama surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II. Prior to launch, players took issue with the game's progression system and microtransactions, prompting EA to make some last minute changes. However, it seems that the damage had already been done, with Battlefront II's physical launch sales down by 60 percent compared to the original game.

Battlefront II launched last Friday and it seems to be under performing at retail. According to Chart-Track, Battlefront 2 has had 60 percent fewer physical sales compared to DICE's 2015 Battlefront release. Chart-Track doesn't count digital sales, so the hit may not be as bad as these initial numbers show, but it seems clear that the negative reaction to the game has stung.

EA still plans to bring microtransactions back into Star Wars Battlefront II at some point. However, the game's problems run deeper than that, with plenty of complaints surrounding the Star Card system and how long it takes to unlock new in-game characters. Right now, we don't know what changes EA plans to make to bring Battlefront II more in line with player expectations.

Here is the full top-ten list for UK physical game sales last week:

  1. Call of Duty: WW2
  2. Star Wars Battlefront 2
  3. FIFA 18
  4. Pokémon Ultra Sun
  5. Pokémon Ultra Moon
  6. Assassin's Creed Origins
  7. The Sims 4
  8. LA Noire Remastered
  9. Super Mario Odyssey
  10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2

  1. The game is headed nowhere. If you can’t get the initial multiplayer base to stabilize than the game has no long term future.

  2. Good I hope it hurts and the digi sales are equally disappointing

  3. EA desperately needs a wake-up call and hopefully this is it. It’s almost like they forgot that their primary directive is to make games that people will play and enjoy, and if they do that the players will gladly open their wallets. Instead, they seem to think that their priority is to make money first and foremost, no matter how much gameplay suffers. It’s almost gotten to the point where their product IS the system of micro-transactions rather than the actual game — their only innovations were in monetization while the gameplay is the same-old rehashed bread-and-butter. They deserve this backlash for being so painfully out of touch with both their product and their audience.

EA, there is a simple solution to all of this. Either release the game for free if it’s going to be micro-transaction filled garbage, or release it for $60 as a AAA title and actually make it fun to play. Right now you do neither.

  4. Wow, I’m surprised. Never thought consumers would learn.

Although, it’s correlation only at this point.

  5. I always say a great game will pay for itself in-time, a game that you need to initially pay that is then littered with game altering microtransactions always gives me the impression that the Devs never had faith in their game to begin with

  6. i’ll think about it when its 50% off….which will most likely happen in a few weeks lol.

  7. Na, wait for 25%. It will price crash after Xmas…….Nobody is buying the bloody thing.
I will not be buying it at all.

  8. you’re right – i’ll wait till its $10

  9. Honestly after being stung by EA over Mass effect andromeda swore i,d never preorder off them again ..And it seems to be working was tempted to get Battlefront 2 Now i,m very happy I didnt .Dont like being veiwed as nothing more than some cash cow too a suit wearing robot.I gladly would have paid extra for dlc unlocks etc not when they openly try to screw us over and think we,ll be happy for it .
