Leo Says – Ep4: Intel Rant Week!

In the fourth week of ‘Leo Says' – our grumpy hero discusses what Intel are doing, and more importantly, what they seem to be doing wrong. Especially when we factor in the ME security flaw that looks to be horrifically bad.

Leo also discusses Intel's Legacy Bios killing in 2020, a story about Optane DIMMs appearing to have poor durability and lacklustre speeds and a new addition of a CPU assembly plant in China. He even manages to get in a word about Ryzen 2 which is due to launch early 2018.

00:15 Introduction
00:40 Intel ME security flaw is real and potentially bad, requires BIOS update and ME firmware
03:53 Intel will kill legacy BIOS by 2020
04:18 Intel adds CPU assembly plant in China
05:05 Intel Optane DIMMs appear to have poor durability and unimpressive speed
08:15 AMD to launch Ryzen 2 in February 2018 with more in March
11:19 12nm LP process from Global Foundries
12:58 Intel 10nm process apparently poorer than current 14nm++ process
13:47 Loads of new Coffee Lake CPUs announced including mobile Core i9-8950HK
15:28 Intel Z390 chipset due in H2 2018, presumably alone with 8 core Coffee Lake CPUs

  1. Isn’t the AMD 400 Series Chipset likely to be similar to AM2 / AM2+ / AM3, etc? In that Pinacle7 “should” work with a 300 Series Chipset but with some level of reduced functionality? Just like you can use Kaby Lake in an Intel 100 Series Chipset motherboard, but without access to Optane, etc?

  2. it’s mostly going to be a feature upgrade.. e.g. 400 series will probably add PCIe 3.0 PCH lanes vs the 2.0 that the 300 series has to match what intel is already doing. as far as major changes that probably won’t happen until the 500 series if they decide to add PCIe 4.0 support which should still be compatible with 3.0 since it’s just a bandwidth increase that no one really needs outside of SSD raid cards.
