Bandai Namco announces Soulcalibur VI for PC, PS4 and Xbox One

The sixth main entry to the Soulcalibur series has been speculated to appear at numerous events since its 2012 predecessor, always being noticeably absent to the displeasure of its fans. The Game Awards 2017 didn’t disappoint, however, as the series is pegged to return in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and, surprisingly, PC.

Previously, the Soul series, including the very first Soul Edge, has been bound to consoles and arcade platforms, only ever breaking those confines to come to mobile phones. This time, Bandai Namco takes a crack at PC, following the same move that NetherRealm Studios made with its Mortal Kombat and Injustice series.

Differing from those series, however, Soulcalibur VI will reinvent its traditional weapon-based combat with additional mechanics, characters and an “epic” story mode that boosts its cinematic value. One of these mechanics is known as the “Reversal Edge” which is a special type of counter, allowing its user to get one up on their opponent if timed right, all while shown through Unreal Engine 4’s dynamic camera angle.

“Two decades after its first iteration, SoulCalibur VI returns to its roots while bringing brand-new gameplay features to the fight,” says the press release from Bandai Namco. “Travel through the signature 16th century stages and experience the struggle for the two legendary swords using a complete roster of returning iconic SoulCalibur characters, along with some newcomers.”

Mitsurugi and Sophitia have been confirmed to return via the announcement trailer, while a new character with a dual-sword staff has been teased nearer its end. This new character seems to mimic the binary opposition of the evil Soul Edge blade and titular, heroic Soulcalibur with one blade being an ominous purple and the other with golden highlights.

Bandai Namco has yet to confirm if Soulcalibur VI will continue the series’ tradition of guest characters, as Tekken’s Heihachi Mishima, Legend of Zelda’s Link and Image Comics’ Spawn appeared in the second game, Star Wars’ Darth Vader and Yoda in the fourth and Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio and Tekken’s Devil Jin in the fifth.

KitGuru Says: I’d personally like to see Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy, Shadow of War’s Talion or even NieR: Automata’s 2B. Who would you like to see appear in Soulcalibur VI?
