AMD launches Ryzen mobile APUs equipped with Vega graphics

AMD is wrapping up its 2017 Ryzen line-up this week with the launch of the Ryzen Mobile Processor. Formerly known as ‘Raven Ridge’, these APUs combine Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 5 CPU cores with Radeon Vega graphics, paving the way for ultra-thin AMD powered gaming laptops.

There are two Ryzen Mobile Processors set to start rolling out, the Ryzen 7 2700U and the Ryzen 5 2500U. According to AMD, the Ryzen 7 2700U is the fastest processor around for ultra-thin gaming notebooks, with up to 44 percent more multi-threaded CPU performance and massive boost to integrated graphics performance as well.

Both the Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U come with four cores and 8 threads, the former comes with a maximum CPU clock speed of 3.8GHz while the latter tops out at 3.6GHz. On the GPU side, the Ryzen 7 is equipped with Vega 10 with a max clock speed of 1300MHz while the Ryzen 5 comes with a Vega 8 GPU with speeds up to 1100MHz. Both APUs have 6MB of L3/L2 cache and are rated for a 15W TDP, making them highly energy efficient.

In summary, with Ryzen Mobile, AMD is offering 3X the CPU performance and up to 2.3X the GPU performance compared to last generation APUs, all while consuming 58 percent less power.

Initially, we will see laptops from Acer, HP and Lenovo featuring Ryzen Mobile Processors. Later on, we should begin to see the likes of Dell, Asus and other OEMs begin rolling out their own Ryzen-powered laptops.

  1. It’ll probably shake the market up even more than desktop, because an APU with Zen cores and (lower clocked) Vega cores is more power efficient than Intel + Nvidia combo. Power efficiency is very important for mobile devices.

  2. We all know ryzen is inferior to intel in gaming and vega is a power hog and is inferior to nvidia. At 15W tdp I don’t think they can match the intel/nvidia maxQ combo in terms of performance but will be better than an intel/intelhd system in terms of gaming.

  3. AMD lags behind Intel in desktop because while kabylake can reach 5GHz, zen runs around 4 GHz due to process limitation of 14nm node. But that isn’t a problem in mobiles as even 4GHz isn’t required here. Another problem is latency issue between CCX but since that isn’t used in 4 core apu, it’s not even a problem.
    Sure Nvidia is more efficient in gpu but integrated graphics for low graphical work like in apu is much more efficient than any discrete graphics provided by Nvidia.

  5. Its mostly technical jargin but his point is that techwise. this will be far more powerful and affordable than a top end intel mobile chip with its intgegrated graphics. Comparing it to an intel chip with an nvidia gpu in a laptop is unfair because these aare likely to be a very different price points and there are too few ultrathins with an nvidia gpu in them.
