This month, Futuremark began rolling out the Cyan Room benchmark, its latest virtual reality focussed benchmark for the VRMark software. We've known for a while that AMD has been pushing for higher VR performance on its GPUs but it seems that Vega really shines in this particular benchmark.
In an email sent to us this morning, the folks at Radeon pointed out that the RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 perform particularly well in Cyan Room, beating out the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070Ti. The RX 580 also edges out the GTX 1060. You can see both benchmark graphs below:
The RX Vega 64 managed to score 170 frames per second in this benchmark, while the RX Vega 56 scored 162 frames per second. Meanwhile, the GTX 1080 sits at 140 frames per second, the GTX 1070Ti at 130 frames per second. The RX 580 battles it out against the GTX 1060, with 103 frames per second and 82 frames per second respectively.
Notably, the GTX 1080Ti is missing from this list, it is safe to assume that Nvidia's top-end gaming card would dominate the chart. Still, given that the RX Vega 64 targets the GTX 1080 specifically, this isn't a bad result for AMD as far as VR gaming is concerned.
FutureMark's 3DMark, VRMark and PCMark 10 softwares are currently all part of the Steam Autumn sale.
KitGuru Says: Do many of you currently use your system for virtual reality? How important is VR performance when it comes to deciding which GPU to buy?
VR is the main reason for me to upgrade GPUs. That’s where graphical fidelity is essential for immersion.
Good to see that AMD is doing good there, despite UE4 only supporting Nvidia’s VR API for some reason.
Think the 1080ti is left off because it is not ahead of the Vega 64. All of the sudden no 1080ti results included!

I didn’t care about VR before and this doesn’t change my mind. VR sucks.
Nvidia is a better dx11 card via 4k and higher resolutions. Vega is a new gpu thats better in dx12 structure and 4k higher resolution. I hope amd makes a vega 1080 so everybody can stfu like… wtf just happen im confused a.f ha..ha vega 56 flashed with 64 bios all the way!
