Nintendo Switch passes 10 million sales, matches Sony’s PS4 trajectory

It’s fair to say that the Nintendo Switch stumbled a little at launch, as the company continued its tradition of under-stocking suppliers and making customers wait. It doesn’t seem to have slowed the hybrid console on bit, though, as the Switch has now reached 10 million units.

The Nintendo Switch has been out since March, taking just nine months to reach this new milestone. This is an entire month less that its fellow Japanese competitor, Sony’s PlayStation 4, which managed to sell the same amount across its first ten months, matching its million-a-month expectation.

While the Switch will likely follow its own path, the PlayStation 4 went on to sell 30 million units by the end of its second year and 50 million the year after that. With Nintendo’s mascot going on to sell over 2 million copies of Super Mario Odyssey within three days, it’s safe to say that these heights are more than achievable for the console.

Moving forward, players are slowly getting more to sink their teeth into, as Nintendo released its latest triple-A title this month in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, as well as announcing the next title in the Beyonetta series. With a new Metroid Prime and fully fledged Pokemon RPG on its way, things seem to be shaping up nicely. And with Hulu finally making its way to the console in the US, there might be hope that we will see video applications across the world soon.

KitGuru Says: It seems Nintendo has Switched the business model it had for the Wii U for something much more effective. I still wish to see more for the console, but it has a lot of promise and many titles in planning. I think my next purchase might be Tiny Metal on the 21st December. How about you?

  1. I guess it is good it is selling but it is not for me. I prefer hardware with more meat on it’s bones that won’t leave me wanting. That is the main reason I stayed away form the first gen PS4 & the Xbox one they were just way to under powered for my liking.

Even now with the second revision of each console out and they have more Graphics power I still kinda snub my nose at them. I guess if I was to buy a console now it would have to be the Xbox One X since it’s Graphics horse power pretty much matches one of my Sapphire Tri-X 390x cards in my gaming rig. I probably will buy a Xbox One X in 2018 to hook up to my big screen TV. I am sure the Switch is fun as I said it is just not for me.

  2. Why buying a One X if you already got a beefy PC? There are no exclusive games you can’t get and that’s why the Switch is so popular, it’s all about the games. And if you know Nintendos games you see that you don’t need so much power because of their graphics style and Mario Kart, Odyssey and even BotW don’t need a better GPU/CPU to play nicely.

  3. I’d be surprised to see this pass 20 million because it’s really failing to appeal to any one other than classic Nintendo fans. The games are still colorful and childish at heart, something gaming moved away from back with the PS2 and Xbox, and therefore Nintendo will struggle to tap into the much larger, mature game market.

  4. glad to see, its perfectly paired with a gaming pc.
