Shin Megami Tensei V for Nintendo Switch is currently in the ‘scrap and build’ phase

The Nintendo Switch has had a great year so far, we've seen plenty of excellent games launch on the system and even received a few teases for future games. One of the Switch's biggest upcoming exclusives is Shin Megami Tensei V, the first numbered game in the series to come to a home console in a long time. However, while the game was announced back in October, it is going to be some time before we see it in action, as development is currently in the ‘scrap and build' phase.

In an interview this week with 4Gamer (via dualshockers), Shin Megami Tensei producer, Kazuyuki Yamai discussed how development was progressing. Shin Megami Tensei III was the last numbered game in the series to launch on a home console. It was a PS2 game and Shin Megami Tensei IV only came to the 3DS, with that in mind, the development team is taking its time figuring out the Switch and how to tackle gameplay.

Currently, the studio is creating art assets and filling in the details. The key takeaway from the interview is that the game is in the ‘scrap and build' phase, meaning gameplay elements are still being narrowed down. Judging by October's teaser trailer, some story elements have been narrowed down, so it is currently a case of trying out new gameplay techniques and seeing what sticks.

Kazuyuki Yamai is asking that fans be patient while the development team works things out. With that in mind, we may not see Shin Megami Tensei V release next year, but hopefully we'll hear more before the end of 2018.

KitGuru Says: Shin Megami Tensei V was one of this year's major Switch exclusive announcements, alongside Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3 and the Pokemon Switch RPG. These early announcements are doing a good job of raising excitement for the console, but release dates are unfortunately scarce. Hopefully over the course of 2018, we'll start to hear more about these upcoming major releases.

  1. Rushed games always go bad, so when someone or a company decides to take time and delay a game it speaks volumes. I am looking forward to it.
