Over the course of 2016, things started to go south for Mad Catz. The peripheral maker suffered from an $11 million loss following the launch of Rock Band 4 and a good chunk of employees were let go. This all led to March of this year, when Mad Catz ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy. Over the last few months though, it looks like a comeback has been brewing for 2018.
Earlier today, a mysterious video popped up online titled ‘Back In The Game'. It doesn't mention Mad Catz specifically, but as Kotaku explains, the video is being shopped around to news outlets by a UK games industry PR manager who has had particularly strong ties to Mad Catz. Beyond that, the peripherals teased in the video do contain that unmistakable Mad Catz design flair.
The video was sent in an email teasing a ‘holiday secret' with a proper announcement date set for the 4th of January 2018. Currently, all signs seem to be pointing to a Mad Catz comeback with a refocus on PC peripherals, like mice and keyboards.
KitGuru Says: It was sad to see Mad Catz go earlier this year but it looks like they may have found their feet again. We don't know for sure, but we'll find out for definite in the first week of January.
Yea I never thought I would see that name again. Mad Catz was known for making cheap controllers for the old consoles when I best knew them as a company. I even heard they started to get into the higher end stuff & then to hear they were going under was a bit unexpected. This is a pretty cut throat industry mind you and today’s kiddy’s are a lot less forgiving towards companies that do not have a knew product out like every week or spruce up every product with RGB or have to word gaming in every products model.
Anyways I hope it is true that they have dug their way back above ground and hopefully can survive a lot more years to come.
