Microsoft set to launch new Xbox Elite Controller

Microsoft's original Xbox Elite controller launched back in 2015 and while many balked at the £120 price tag, it still ended up selling very well. Now this year, it looks like Microsoft is preparing to introduce a new and improved Elite controller, upping the ante with more features.

The original Elite controller included magnetic, interchangeable thumbsticks, two different style D-pads, extra paddle buttons for the back of the controller and hair trigger locks. The controller introduced remappable buttons and was overall better built compared to the standard Xbox One pad, with a stainless steel body and a rubber grip coating.

Now according to leaked images and various reports, the next Elite controller is on the way, which will include a USB-C port for fast charging, Bluetooth support, three-level Hair Trigger locks, longer travel for the rear button paddles and the option to save three button map profiles.

Interestingly, sources speaking with The Verge confirmed that this new controller is genuine. Microsoft will also be putting an old patent to work, adding in an adjustable tension mechanism for the thumbsticks. Finally, Microsoft will also be fixing one of the big issues with the original Elite controller- the new version will reportedly have a rechargable battery pack included right out of the box, removing the need to either use double A batteries or purchase a separate play and charge kit.

KitGuru Says: I've had the original Elite controller for quite some time and I like it a lot. However, from the sounds of it, this new Elite controller will be a pretty major upgrade. Hopefully these upgrades don't also bump up the price tag beyond the original. Do any of you happen to have an Xbox Elite controller? What do you think of the changes Microsoft is reportedly making?

  1. Hopefully they have improved the bumpers, which are currently not fit for purpose. I am using my 4th elite controller, none of which have lasted a year.
