The PS4 should surpass the PS3’s lifetime sales this year as overall sales cross 76.5 million

At the end of December, Sony revealed that it had managed to surpass the 70 million PS4 sales milestone, bolstered by the PS4 Pro and a strong lineup of games. These results were counted somewhat in the middle of the Christmas rush, so how did the final month of 2017 and the first month of 2018 stack up for Sony? Well, the company managed to shift another 6.5 million consoles for a start, but software sales were the truly impressive part.

Today, Sony announced that it has managed to sell 76.5 million PS4 consoles worldwide at this point in time. We unfortunately don’t know the split between the base PS4 and the Pro version, either way though, it is an impressive milestone to hit and if Sony continues at its current pace, then the PS4 will surpass the PS3's lifetime sales of 83.8 million units by the end of 2018.

Given the huge user base of PS4 hardware, game sales are very high. According to Sony, over 650 million copies of games have been sold for the PS4 so far both at retail and digitally. In all, the last quarter brought in 718 billion Yen in profits for Sony's PS4 division.

2018 is already shaping up to be another massive year for PlayStation too. The Shadow of the Colossus remake lands this month, and will be followed by God of War in April. Insomniac's Spider-Man is expected to launch in September and finally, Detroit: Become Human is also going to be releasing this year. We aren't expecting The Last of Us Part II to make its way out, but it just goes to show that Sony has plenty lined up to keep people invested in the PS4 ecosystem.

KitGuru Says: While I'm primarily a PC gamer, the PS4's exclusives are often too good to pass on, so I do keep a PS4 Pro in the house for those occasions. How many of you currently own a PS4? Or are you planning to get one?
