Despite low sales, Skull & Bones reportedly achieved “record player engagement”

Described by Ubisoft’s CEO as a AAAA experience, Skull & Bones finally released earlier this month to middling reviews and low sales. Despite the negative perception, Ubisoft has chosen to put a positive spin on the matter, claiming that the game has achieved “record player engagement.”

In a press release discussing the launch of the game’s first Season ‘Raging Tides’, Ubisoft announced that “Since launch, Skull and Bones has achieved record player engagement, with over four hours of average daily playtime, the second highest ever at Ubisoft.”

It is a rather common tactic to see publishers tout engagement numbers for games which have performed relatively poorly.

We saw this recently with Call of Duty MW3 – and considering the fact that Skull & Bones was said to have managed to draw fewer than 1 million players (free trials included), the pivot to discussing engagement makes sense.

With a decade’s worth of development and $200 million spent in costs, Skull & Bones will truly need record levels of long-term engagement in order to make its money back.
