Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is set to launch on April 3rd with three editions

Just like the first title in the series, Obsidian Entertainment crowdfunded Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire to astounding success, smashing its goal by 400 percent. Backers will finally be able to collect their rewards come April 3rd, where the sequel will be available to everyone for purchase on PC.

The original title, Pillars of Eternity used Kickstarter for its crowdfunding, with the RPG surpassing $3 million and taking the title of Kickstarter's most-funded videogame from previous record holder, Double Fine Adventure. This has since been superseded by Torment: Tides of Numenera, which raised over $4 million and the current record holder, Shenmue 3 with a whopping $6.3 million.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire instead opted to use Fig as its crowdfunding site, reaching a sizeable $4.4 million raised prior to the end of the campaign, smashing its $1.1 million goal. The title will come in digital and physical editions, with the ordinary version costing $50 and the Deluxe Edition just $10 more for an in-game pet and the soundtrack, totalling $60.  The top-end $75 Obsidian Edition includes everything from the previous titles and grants access to the first three expansions planned for the game.

“Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is our first sequel here at Obsidian, and we’ve created something incredible,” said Obsidian Entertainment chief executive officer Feargus Urquhart in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “At Obsidian, we are all about stories, worlds, and characters, and in Deadfire we’ve done it again with a vast open world explorable by the player’s own customizable ship, character customization with enough options to make any RPG player want to make a hundred characters, and an exciting narrative that truly delivers on the reactivity that makes our games special. We’re confident that new and returning players will find Deadfire to be the RPG experience of the year.”

KitGuru Says: I have no doubt that Pillars of Eternity II will be an instant classic, just like its predecessor as both titles fill a hole of old-school RPGs that hasn’t seemingly been satisfied by any other modern title. Are you looking forward to Deadfire?

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
