Blizzard is holding a Warcraft III tournament next week and will be patching the original game

Earlier this week, we learned that Blizzard had been inviting a bunch of Warcraft 3 pro players to its HQ for a ‘secret offline event'. This immediately sparked rumors surrounding a remaster of the original game, or even perhaps a Warcraft 4. Now in order to keep a lid on things, Blizzard is being more upfront about its event, announcing the Warcraft III Invitational tournament, alongside a big patch for the original game.

So it would seem that if Warcraft III Remastered is in the works, Blizzard isn't ready to announce it just yet. For now though, the original game will be getting an update, including balance adjustments to heroes, widescreen support and more. The update is available on the Public Test Realm version of the game, which you can easily switch to from within the Battle.net launcher.

The Warcraft III Invitational tournament will be broadcast on Twitch between the 27th of February and the 28th. It will include 4V4 matches, Free-for-All games and some friendly competitions. Here is the full list of players taking part in the tournament:

  • Neo [Observer] Germany
  • Remo [Observer] Germany
  • Happy [Undead] Russia
  • Foggy [Night Elf] Ukraine
  • HawK [Human] Russia
  • Effect [Human] Sweden
  • ReMinD [Night Elf] South Korea
  • Lyn [Orc] China
  • FoCuS [Orc] South Korea
  • LawLiet [Night Elf] South Korea
  • Grubby [Orc] Netherlands
  • MaDFroG [Undead] Sweden
  • Insomnia [Human] Bulgaria
  • Tak3r [Orc] Germany

This doesn't exactly squash rumors that Blizzard is preparing for a Warcraft comeback, but it does pump the breaks on them a bit. Blizzard is hoping to bring the ageing RTS back into the spotlight, so it is difficult to imagine that there isn't something bigger planned for a bit later down the road, it just likely won't be at this tournament.

KitGuru Says: A continuation of the original Warcraft series is something that fans have been after for years now. Right now, Blizzard seems to be focusing on continuing support for Warcraft III, but perhaps we will see some bigger steps later on this year.
