Trion updates its sci-fi MMO with Defiance 2050 remake

Trion approached its 2013 massive multiplayer online (MMO) title in a rather unprecedented way, influencing gameplay by the events that occurred in its companion television show of the same name, Defiance. Unfortunately, the television show was cancelled in 2015, but Trion has continued building on Defiance and believes it to warrant a remake/sequel dubbed Defiance 2050.

Defiance 2050 takes place around 4 years after the original game, and therefore 20 years after the Arkfall, the key event that ended the war between humanity and the alien Votans. Commenting on the scale of the remake, Trion has stated that Defiance 2050 “recreates the original game from the ground up.” This means better textures, resolutions, framerates as well as major gameplay overhauls to support action on a larger scale.

“Defiance 2050 has been created with the original game’s community in mind,” producer Matt Pettit explained in the announcement. “The team has been listening to feedback and taking some helpful cues from fans to really create the Defiance experience that people have wanted for a long time. Defiance 2050 marks a shift for the game that goes beyond the change from the year 2046 to 2050, and we are absolutely thrilled to hear what people think of it.”

The original game released as a full priced title before transitioning into a free-to-play model a year later in 2014. It is not yet known whether Defiance 2050 will continue the free-to-play model, however considering Trion is looking to bolster its player base, this is the more likely scenario.

A closed beta will be held in the summertime, with signups available HERE.

KitGuru Says: After buying into the original game, I was impressed with its storytelling but felt  that it lacked the inclusiveness needed for an MMO environment. I have heard of the many improvements that Trion has made over the years which has me tempted to jump back in, but I might hold off until Defiance 2050 drops. Does Defiance 2050 interest you?
