The Galaxy S9 isn’t fairing too well in benchmarks

Samsung only just unveiled the Galaxy S9 but it looks like users are already putting the device through its paces and discovering how it holds up against the competition. So far, the Galaxy S9 doesn't seem to be fairing too well in benchmarks, coming behind even the iPhone 7 in some tests.

The folks over at Anandtech already have a Galaxy S9 on hand, powered by the Exynos 9810 chip. The results so far show that in all tests, Samsung's latest flagship is bested in performance by the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. This isn't an uncommon scenario, as Apple's devices usually tend to perform very well given the closed off and highly optimized nature of iOS. Surprisingly though, the Galaxy S9 was also beaten by the iPhone 7 in some benchmarks, while coming out on top in others.

The report does note that the Galaxy S9 being tested is using pre-release firmware designed to get the phone up and running for MWC. With that in mind, some additional optimization could be done before the S9 begins shipping later this month. However, with just a couple of weeks left to go until launch, it seems unlikely that any drastic performance updates will be available on day one.

In GFXBench, the Galaxy S9 does get the edge over the iPhone 7. However, in WebView benchmarks and GeekBench single-core performance, the iPhone 7 comes out on top.

KitGuru Says: Samsung's Exynos chips are fairly beefy and more than enough to handle modern smartphone tasks. However, it looks like there is still room for improvement when it comes to optimization on Android devices.
