Microsoft is planning a Surface Hub 2 for later this year

Back in June 2015, Microsoft launched one of its most ambitious Surface devices yet in the form of the Surface Hub. This particular Surface system was a huge 55-inch or 84-inch all-in-one PC, with prices of just over £5,700 and £16,200 respectively. The Surface Hub eventually arrived, but it was held back by its fair share of production issues. Despite these earlier issues, Microsoft is currently working on a Surface Hub 2.

Since PC hardware has advanced somewhat since the original Surface Hub hit the market, it makes sense for Microsoft to be working on an updated version. According to Thurrot, the new Surface Hub will be unveiled in May at the next Microsoft Build conference. Currently, the next Surface Hub is being developed under the codename ‘Aruba'.

The Surface Hub 2 will usher in both new hardware and software updates, though original Surface Hub owners will also receive the software overhaul. While finalised hardware is currently unconfirmed, I would expect we'll see the Surface Hub 2 make the jump to Intel's Coffee Lake processor architecture. We'll likely see the return of huge 55-inch and 84-inch 4K displays too.

The currently available Surface Hub versions cost £5709 and £16,269. Despite the huge price tags, Microsoft continually saw demand outstrip supply over the last couple of years, which led to long waiting times for customers. Microsoft has said that Surface Hub buyers currently on the waiting list will be able to choose between sticking with their current order, or waiting for the Surface Hub 2, indicating that the current price tags might not change much.

KitGuru Says: I've always thought that the Surface Hub is a really cool idea, despite the obscenely high price tags. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft changes things around for version 2 later this year. Hopefully we'll get more details in May, when the official announcement is due to take place.
