Apple may finally release a new Macbook Air this year

A couple of years ago when Apple reintroduced the standard Macbook, it looked like the Macbook Air might be on its way out. Apple's thinnest laptop hasn't received a major upgrade for a few years and the standard Macbook comes close to matching it in size. However, that may be changing quite soon, with reports indicating that a new 13-inch Macbook Air could be launching this year.

Apple still sells the Macbook Air, but it is in need of more than a few upgrades. The laptop currently sports a dual-core Broadwell generation Intel processor, a 900p or 720p display depending on which model you buy and 8GB of DDR3 memory. According to Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will be replacing the current Macbook Air this year and knock the price down to make it more affordable.

Details are thin, but Kuo believes that the new Macbook Air will be introduced in Q2 this year, with a lower price tag to target students. The current base-model Macbook Air sells for $999, so we could be looking at a lower $799 or $899 price point for the new model.

We might not see a major design change, but hopefully Apple will throw in a higher resolution display, an option for more memory and potentially a more up to date processor.

KitGuru Says: The Macbook Air is a nice enough machine but it has been neglected for around three years now. It will be interesting to see what changes Apple makes in order to bring the Air back in to relevance.
