EA Vancouver picks up where Visceral Games left off with new Star Wars game

Star Wars fans mourned the loss of studio Visceral Games late last year, which saw Amy Hennig’s action-adventure Star Wars game gone with it. EA criticised the title for being “too linear,” wanting to shift the project to another studio in hopes of creating a broader experience. It seems the publisher has now found its studio, as EA Vancouver is gearing up for development.

The news comes via a job listing for a Lead Online Engineer, which confirms that there is already an “experienced team of developers working on a AAA Star Wars title in development at EA Vancouver.” Considering the developers have apparently been working on a Star Wars game for an undisclosed amount of time, it’s assumed that this is the latest incarnation of Visceral’s title.

As it says in the title of the job role, the Lead Online Engineer, meaning that the project is likely to be a games-as-a-service title complete with some form of monetisation. Specifically, the listing asks for experience with “online features such as Matchmaking, Asynchronous interactions, Live services, Server-host migration.”

Previously, the job listing stated its intent was “to deliver Online features for a Star Wars Open World project,” however, all mention of the project being open world has now been removed from the description. While this might possibly see changed before an official reveal or the description was simply inaccurate, the switch to an open world setting does track well with EA’s unhappiness at Hennig’s linear approach.

Not much else is known about EA Vancouver’s Star Wars project at this time, and until an official reveal, all information is tentative.

KitGuru Says: Although there will no doubt be quite a lot of skepticism as to whether this project will reach the finish line, it is worth remembering that EA has only produced two games during its contract with Disney. We’re sure to see another Star Wars game away from the Battlefront series, but what kind would you want to come to life?
