Back in August last year, we reported that David Vonderhaar – the long-time lead at Treyarch – announced his departure from the studio after more than 18 years. At the time, Vonderhaar opted not to share his future plans, though we now know that the industry veteran has opened up his own new studio.
As reported by GameInformer, NetEase Games announced the formation of a brand new studio. Known as BulletFarm, the team will be led by long-time Treyarch veteran David Vonderhaar.
Vonderhaar was best known for his work on the Call of Duty Black Ops series – in particular the highly-praised multiplayer modes.
Under NetEase Games, BulletFarm is said to be working on a new AAA first-person shooter with a heavy focus on co-op gameplay. Little else is currently known about the title, aside from the fact that it is set in an original universe and will utilise Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.
Speaking on his new position, Vonderhaar said “This is a departure from the games I've worked on, but one that showcases my passion for rich characters, precise mechanics, more intimate storytelling, and plenty of action. NetEase has provided us an incredible support structure to explore these new avenues and allow true freedom to begin building the concept and ideas for our game.”
With Vonderhaar achieving such great success in the past with first-person shooters, it will be interesting to see how BulletFarm approaches this new venture.
