Assassin’s Creed Red to feature “substantial evolution” of the Anvil Engine

Last week, we reported on a bunch of new details surrounding Ubisoft’s previously-announced Assassin’s Creed Infinity platform. More has since been revealed, with insiders claiming these titles will utilise an evolved version of its ‘Anvil’ engine.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, the next phase of Assassin’s Creed titles will all be folded into Ubisoft’s upcoming AC: Infinity game hub. Kicking off this new era will be Assassin’s Creed Red – the long desired Feudal Japan entry which is said to be coming some time this year.

According to the report, AC: Red will be the first title utilise an evolved version of the series’ Anvil Engine. Named the ‘Anvil Pipeline’, this new iteration of the engine is said to help all the various AC studios around the world “to work from one unified branch, rather than having different versions and branches.”

As claimed by Insider-Gaming, one of the benefits of this new engine is that it will allow for ray-traced global illumination and virtual geometry – the former of which will likely have a substantive impact on graphical fidelity and realism.

Another benefit to this new engine is that it required a complete overhaul of many of the series’ systems, including “animations, its parkour system, dynamic weather, and more” – meaning players should notice many changes and improvements across the board.

Other aspects of AC: Red which have been tweaked include combat and stealth. Though perhaps not quite as revolutionary as the engine changes, these two primary aspects of the series have been enhanced. Combat is said to be somewhat similar to AC: Valhalla, but with “a lot more gore, including blood, and decapitations.”

Stealth has seen more notable gameplay improvements, with players being able to “extinguish torches, hide in tall grass and bushes, and even go prone whenever they please.”

2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins marked the next step in the AC formula, and based on what has been shared so far, it seems as though AC: Red will be its successor in that regard. Hopefully the revamped engine makes for a significantly enhanced experience. We won’t have to wait long to find out.
