While there are a lot of layoffs happening in the games industry right now, Embracer Group has been hit the hardest, with a failed investment deal putting the company into crisis mode last year. As a result, several studios have been shut down entirely to cut costs. Embracer had also confirmed it was evaluating some of its owned-studios for potential sale, with Gearbox appearing as the top candidate. As it turns out, Embracer is selling off Saber Interactive instead.
Prior to being acquired by Embracer Group, Saber Interactive was best known as a support studio, working on ports for various titles, like The Witcher 3 for Nintendo Switch. Embracer Group acquired Saber Interactive in early 2020, just ahead of the pandemic. A year later, the studio was tasked with developing the highly-anticipated Knights of the Old Republic remake.
As reported by Bloomberg, KOTOR Remake should still be in the works at Saber Interactive, but we'll have to wait and see. The new owners, who aren't named and are a privately owned investment group, did just spend $500 million to acquire the studio, and part of the reason behind that could well have been the promise of a highly-anticipated Star Wars game.
Aside from the KOTOR Remake, Saber Interactive is also working on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which is due to release later this year.
