The Sea of Thieves launch day didn’t go so well

Launch days very rarely go smoothly for online games, with many experiencing a plethora of problems despite attempts to iron out all issues during the beta phase. The Sea of Thieves was no different, with developer Rare temporarily disabling new players from entering the game while it fixed the issues.

Upon launching the new title, players reported numerous problems from server lag, to disappearing rewards and progression, to its “Greybeard” error that means players simply couldn’t connect in the first place. This was due to an overwhelming number of players connecting all at once.

Rare took to Twitter to acknowledge the issues, stating that “In order to resolve the issues players are seeing with the servers, we will be temporarily suspending new players joining the game. We'll get everyone back in and playing as quickly as we can!”

Fortunately, the team managed to get it resolved in just over four hours of addressing the issue publicly, stating that the servers should now work as intended. Rare is continually working on improving the game and expects that this might not be the only problem it encounters, but the sheer popularity should weed these bugs out for fixing in no time.

KitGuru Says: Contrary to popular opinion that Rare suffered from its many closed beta periods, it did open it up for stress testing before release. Issues like these tend to be regular in the online world, particularly with new IPs. Did you manage to log on before access was cut off? Are you enjoying Sea of Thieves?
