Rare pushes back cosmetics in favour of more substantial Sea of Thieves content

Sea of Thieves is a divisive game, in that it’s recognised as a well-built game with a lack of things to do. Developer Rare knows this, announcing that it will be shifting its focus towards more gameplay elements such as maps, enemies, effectively placing cosmetics and pets “on the back burner.”

Rare was careful to emphasise in its blog update that its previously announced plans to add Pets and Ship Captaincy has been re-prioritised as something that the developers will eventually revisit. Its new focus will instead be on “meeting your needs,” which essentially means more significant content for returning players to jump into.

Players won’t need to wait too long for something to do in the title, as Rare will introduce weekly events that will bring with it “new mechanics” and “unique rewards” in May. The Hungering Deep update will also be arriving around a similar time, kicking off a special event that ushers in a “new AI threat to the world.”

Moving towards the summer, the team is focusing on its Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates which will introduce a new ship type and new region respectively. Both updates will also include new gameplay dynamics, enemies, questlines and subsequent rewards.

All of these updates will be free additions, costing players nothing to delve into. The upcoming updates are, however, subject to change, as Rare outlines that its “plans will continue to be fluid, but always with the goals listed above as our guiding principles.”

KitGuru Says: Since its launch, I’ve felt that Rare has crafted a solid game but I do agree with the majority that there is simply not enough to indulge in. It’s good that the developers have recognised and addressed this, meaning that more content could help Sea of Thieves' longevity. How do you feel about Sea of Thieves’ current content? Will you jump back in when the updates land?
