Far Cry 5 hits new milestones, topping UK charts

It seems that Ubisoft has struck gold with the launch of Far Cry 5, as the title keeps breaking down new milestones with ease. Not only is the title currently sitting atop the UK charts, but it does so being the fastest selling game in its franchise in the UK, cementing that an Easter launch bodes well rather than the run-up to Christmas.

Far Cry 5 has knocked Sea of Thieves off the top spot, according to Chart-Track, with the PlayStation 4 version in particular accounting for 60 percent of the title’s box sales. This places Far Cry 5 as the sixth biggest UK launch in Ubisoft’s history for the platform, which is made all the more impressive given that digital sales were not included within this tracking process, despite having a greater prominence over physical sales year-on-year.

Usually, Ubisoft launches its new Far Cry games, as well as Assassin’s Creed games for that matter, in the weeks leading up to Christmas. This shift has enabled Far Cry 5 to dethrone 2013’s BioShock Infinite as the fastest-selling title in the 13th week of the year in the UK.

Elsewhere in the charts, FIFA 18 has climbed back up from fifth place to second, seeing a 61 percent rise in sales thanks to its release on the previous generation consoles as well as all current platforms in circulation, with PlayStation 4 giving the best push on the individual formats chart. Sea of Thieves, Mario Kart Deluxe and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds do well to cling onto and climb their respective spots despite being exclusives to the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Sadly, A Way Out dropped 5 places since last week and Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom was knocked out of the chart entirely. The UK is not often a core demographic for Japanese role-playing games but with the popularity of Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles and a number of others in recent years, this doesn’t bode well for the Ghibli-inspired RPG.

KitGuru Says: I’m a little saddened that chances of a sequel to Ni No Kuni II are dashed a little thanks to sales performance, but Far Cry 5 deserves the success its bringing. It looks like the switch to open world, giving players the freedom to travel where they want was exactly the revitalisation the franchise needed. Have you been playing Far Cry 5?
