Call of Duty Black Ops 4 event confirms leaks, game won’t launch on Steam

Activision held its Call of Duty Black Ops 4 reveal event last night, confirming that rather than having a single-player campaign, this time around Treyarch is focussing on additional multiplayer modes. This year's Call of Duty will have a bigger focus on zombies, in addition to a new Battle Royale mode called ‘Blackout'. Finally, in a surprising move, the game won't be launching on Steam, another first for the Call of Duty franchise.

We saw Activision start to shift games to Blizzard's Battle.net platform last year with the launch of Destiny 2. Now, Call of Duty will be following that same path, with Black Ops 4 set to release on Battle.net instead of Steam.

Aside from that one major surprise, the Black Ops 4 event confirmed a lot of what we already knew. There won't be a single-player campaign, but Treyarch is talking up its Zombies and Battle Royale modes. The BR mode will be called ‘Blackout' and will add vehicle combat into Call of Duty for the first time.

The Blackout map is said to be 1,500 times larger than Nuketown. Players will be able to select classes still, and characters from the Zombies mode will be playable. Treyarch will be stitching together a few of the best maps from past Black Ops games for this game mode too, creating a huge space for players to compete in over land, sea and air. Unfortunately, we have to wait until E3 to see Blackout in action properly.

KitGuru Says: I'm not too surprised by the fact that the previous leaks were accurate. However, I am a bit surprised that we have to wait until E3 to actually see gameplay for the Blackout mode. The transition away from Steam was also unexpected. How do you guys feel about the changes being made to Call of Duty this year?
