The Oculus Go is already hitting store shelves

It has been a long time coming, but it looks like the Oculus Go will finally be available starting this week. The standalone VR headset was announced way back in October last year, and more recently, signs pointed to a proper launch at Facebook's F8 conference this week. It turns out that headsets have already begun hitting retail stores, meaning Facebook will be prepared to announce immediate availability this week.

That immediate availability only applies to the US for the time being. A post on Reddit earlier today showcased a stack of the headsets ready to go at a Best Buy location in Arkansas. Both 32GB and 64GB headsets are shown, Amazon US also already has a pre-release page set up.

At this point in time, there is no word on UK availability of the Oculus Go. However, the F8 conference opened up to developers earlier today, so we will hopefully get some news on that front today, or at some point over the next couple of days.

The Oculus Go is the company's first stab at a standalone virtual reality headset, with all of the necessary hardware built in. The $199 HMD has a 2560×1440 display, a Snapdragon SoC to power apps and games, it also has built in tracking and motion controller support.

KitGuru Says: Whether or not this cheap, standalone headset is going to be enough to bring VR to the masses remains to be seen. However, it does seem sensibly priced for casual usage, with performance that can rival the Galaxy S8 in particular.
