Fortnite on the Switch already has over two million players

Over the last year, Epic Games has continued to strike gold with Fortnite's free to play Battle Royale mode. Since hitting smartphone platforms, the game has shot up to having 125 million players worldwide, and it looks like further growth is already coming from the game's launch on the Nintendo Switch, having already racked up over two million downloads.

During Nintendo's E3 Direct stream on Tuesday evening, Fortnite was announced as being immediately available on the Switch. This is a fairly big shadow drop for Nintendo, as Fortnite continues to be one of the biggest games in the world. Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, confirmed to Polygon that the game had “more than two million downloads in less than 24 hours” after launch.

While Fortnite being on Switch is great news all around, it has caused some backlash for Sony. As we reported yesterday, many players are upset that they can't link their official Fortnite account to the Switch version of the game if it was already used on a PS4.

This is the latest example of Sony shunning the cross-platform efforts of developers. Nintendo and Microsoft have been very open to the idea of cross-platform multiplayer, and have even begun taking steps in the right direction with titles like Rocket League and Minecraft.

KitGuru Says: I've had the chance to try out Fortnite on the Switch and I must say, it looks a lot better than I was expecting, and it runs fairly smoothly. Still, the huge numbers that this game manages to pull consistently never ceases to amaze me. Have any of you tried out Fortnite on the Switch yet?
