Valve has announced that The International 2024, the biggest Dota 2 event of the year, will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September. This announcement is great news for fans in Europe who have not had the opportunity to visit The International since its inaugural edition in 2011, when it was part of the Gamescom trade expo in Cologne, Germany.
The exact dates for the event are yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to begin in September, slightly earlier than in previous years. This could be the beginning of a shift to relocate the tournament back to late summer, as the event has typically been hosted in August.
The major event will take place in Copenhagen's Royal Arena, which has held several esports events in the past. The event will feature 16 teams, direct invitations, and open qualifications. After the Dota Pro Circuit, which previously determined qualifying teams, tournament invitations will revert to the original method, with Valve inviting the best teams from the year and organising open and closed qualifications for the remaining seats.
Valve has also stated that teams will be selected based on their performance at tournaments throughout the year, with some events carrying more weight than others. International events that require qualifications will be given more importance than invitation-only single-region tournaments, for example.
