Brave web browser launches trials for opt-in ads that pay viewers cryptocurrency

Brave is one of the most popular browsers on Android, and it is slowly making inroads on Windows too. The developers of Brave are big believers in Blockchain technology and they want to use it to create a fair advertisement system that benefits both promoters and viewers.

Yesterday, Brave announced that they would be trialing a new opt-in advertisement system that would pay users 70% of the gross ad revenue. Users would be paid via the Basic Attention Token (BAT) which is an Ethereum based token. BAT would then be converted into local currency through the cryptocurrency exchange, Uphold.

The new system is meant to give the user privacy. Ads will not be served via a cloud-based system, but via a regularly updated catalogue system that will be downloaded to the user device. Advertisements will then be matched through the user’s device, rather than served by a third party.

These catalogues are made per region and will cater to a users' home language. This way, users will only see advertisements relevant to them, and in the language they speak.

KitGuru Says: This is a fascinating idea that benefits both advertisers and users. It will be good see what becomes of this trial and if it makes it out of the testing phase. Do you think this method of advertising is viable?
