People tend to make fun of Microsoft’s browsers, but it seems that Edge for iOS and Android are doing very well for themselves. The Android version of the browser has just hit five million total downloads. In addition, Microsoft is also integrating Adblock Plus directly into the browser.
MSPowerUser reports that Microsoft Edge for Android has been downloaded over five million times. The momentum seems to be with the browser as just six months ago Edge was only on one million downloads. It is still way behind the likes of Firefox and Chrome that sit at over 100 million and 1 billion downloads respectively.
The bigger news comes from The Verge, as Microsoft has confirmed that Adblock Plus will now be directly built-in to the browser. It is currently available to Microsoft Edge for Android beta users, with an iOS test programme to follow.
Microsoft is following in the footsteps of both Mozilla and Google as they both implemented their own built-in adblockers into their browsers. The Google one isn’t very aggressive with its blocking, still letting many ads through. Whilst Firefox’s is only available when using the “Private Browsing” feature.
KitGuru Says: Microsoft Edge, at least for Android, has amassed quite the following. It will be interesting to see if Edge on Mobile can make a name for itself. Do you use Microsoft Edge on iOS or Android?
