CD Projekt Red addresses speculations of a Witcher/Cyberpunk crossover

CD Projekt Red revealed a little more about the world of Cyberpunk 2077 during its E3 showcase, but one question has been on most people’s minds since the developer announced its next project: Will The Witcher’s Ciri appear. While the answer isn’t as clear cut as some had hoped, the developer has since shed some light on what to expect regarding the two series crossing over.

This article will contain spoilers for The Witcher 3.

At a glance, it seems like the fantasy-based Witcher series would have no place in the science fiction world of Cyberpunk 2077, however the developers themselves have already bridged that gap. Sent to another dimension for her own protection, Ciri describes the world to be much like we’ve seen in Cyberpunk 2077 trailer.

“People had metal in their heads, waged war from a distance, using things similar to megascopes,” Ciri tells Geralt presumably referencing the foreign concept of guns. “And there were no horses, everyone had their own flying ship instead.”

Of course, this was made as more of an Easter egg than confirmation of the two worlds being linked, much to the dismay of Cyberpunk 2077 director Adam Badowski. When asked by Polygon whether Ciri would be making an appearance in the upcoming title, Badowski simply replied how much he hated that question, thoroughly amusing CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwiński.

“We are not Kingdom Hearts,” scowls Badowski. “We are not joining universes, and I know that there are a lot of fans on the team and they would like to have Ciri in the game. But I am totally against it, still.”

Iwiński, however, has other ideas as he gave a tongue in cheek nod towards it being possible in the future. “Maybe you will change your mind,” he says to Badowski while telling Polygon that “there is a little hope” after all.

The takeaway from this is that while Ciri is unlikely to appear as a main segment of Cyberpunk 2077, it’s clear that both the studio and the fans are interested in seeing something between the two series come to fruition. Although nothing has been confirmed, this could be in the form of a reference or Easter egg similar to that which appeared in The Witcher 3 or downloadable content, but development of Cyberpunk 2077 is still far too early to tell.

KitGuru Says: While the Easter egg was definitely a cool nod at what’s to come, I can see why Badowski is apprehensive. Cyberpunk 2077 needs to be able to stand on its own two feet, but it would be interesting to see something like Ciri appearing after the main story. Would you like to see The Witcher cross over with Cyberpunk or would you prefer the two series to be kept separate?
