Following successful staff security key trials, Google introduces the Titan Key

Google recently made it known that its security key trial for 85,000 members of staff was a resounding success, with no account compromises since the introduction of the YubiKey. Google has now announced its own security key for the public- the Titan Key, which will be available in both USB and Bluetooth variants.

Google plans to release the Titan Key this year as a security solution for general users. It will come in USB and Bluetooth forms, while the software found on the Titan Key is developed in-house. Google has been testing its new security key software since early last year, so this project has been in the works for quite some time.

Google really wants to make security keys an integral part of account security. One of the main problems restricting the adoption of security keys is that if you forget it, you may be locked out of your account. Google wants to make them second nature, in the same way many people wouldn’t leave the house without their smartphone or house keys.

The Titan Key will be available in the next few months via the Google Store. You can pick up the Bluetooth and USB version in a bundle for $50, or just one for between $20-$25.

KitGuru Says: It’s good to see more exposure for the security key, it isn’t perfect, but it improves account security significantly. Would you buy the Titan Key?
