There won’t be a new Assassin’s Creed next year, Odyssey will get DLC instead

Following on from Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft made the decision to halt its annual release schedule for the franchise. This change paved the way for Assassin's Creed Origins, a reinvention of the series and this year, we'll be getting Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which takes the RPG direction a step further. While we are getting two games back to back, Ubisoft has confirmed that we won't have another game next year.

It was surprising to see Assassin's Creed Odyssey announced this year. However, Ubisoft's CEO has since assured people that the game won't be going annual once again, as there won't be another Assassin's Creed in 2019. Speaking at Gamescom (via Gamespot), Yves Guillemot had the following to say:

“On Assassin's, we had a game in 2017 and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin's next year. It's just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you're not going to have a fully fledged one.”

At first that quote makes it sound like perhaps we'll get some sort of spin-off game in 2019 instead. However, that won't be the case, instead Ubisoft plans to support Assassin's Creed Odyssey with frequent DLC releases throughout the year.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is shaping up to be fairly solid. We've already talked about how the game will cement Assassin's Creed's future as an RPG, but the Ancient Greece setting is also very exciting. The game will be releasing on the 5th of October for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

KitGuru Says: I'm glad that Ubisoft isn't jumping straight back into annual releases with Assassin's Creed. From the sounds of it, Odyssey will be getting a ton of post-release support too and a good chunk of it will likely be free, as we saw with Origins. Are any of you planning on picking up Assassin's Creed this year?
