Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be on Nintendo Switch as a ‘cloud game’

Earlier this year, we saw Capcom experimenting with cloud gaming on the Nintendo Switch in Japan, bringing Resident Evil VII to the system as a streamable game. Ubisoft seems to be doing something very similar with the launch of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which will also be available on the Switch via the cloud.

So far, these ‘cloud games' have only been available to Switch owners in Japan, although there are ways to try it out in other regions. The Nintendo Switch is a solid console but it doesn't really have the capability to run games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey without huge graphical changes. To get around this, Ubisoft will be releasing Assassin's Creed Odyssey ‘Cloud Version' for the Switch.

As with any ‘cloud' game, quality will heavily depend on the user's internet connection, which will be part of the reason this release is being limited to Japan only. Judging by the trailer though, the game will look pretty solid on the Switch. Impressions of Resident Evil VII's cloud version seemed positive and Assassin's Creed will likely be using the same streaming system, so this could end up working quite well.

The cloud version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey will be available via the Japanese eShop from the 5th of October, the same day the game releases on other platforms across the world.

KitGuru Says: Limiting these cloud versions to a specific region seems like a smart move as there are still plenty of kinks to iron out when it comes to cloud gaming. Still, it is interesting to see the Switch getting more big releases like this, if these cloud versions can eventually work well in other regions, then this could be a good way to extend the console's life-span.
