Call of Duty Blackout targets 60 frames per second but some systems may struggle

Call of Duty is doing something a little different this year. Black Ops 4 will feature ‘Blackout' as a brand new game mode, heavily inspired by popular Battle Royale titles. While we can usually count on Call of Duty's multiplayer running at a solid 60 frames per second, it looks like this particular mode will be a bit more taxing.

As part of a huge Game Informer Q&A, Black Ops 4 design director, David Vonderhaar, explained that while the studio's target remains at 60 frames per second with Blackout, it will be harder to hit that number compared to other game modes. He didn't go into specifics, but it sounds like we may see a lower average frame rate in Blackout on some systems compared to other multiplayer modes. The base Xbox One and PS4, alongside older or lower-end PCs may struggle to keep up the pace, although 60 frames per second will technically be ‘achievable', since the frame rate remains unlocked.

While Blackout may struggle to maintain a locked 60 frames per second, it will likely run far better than PUBG, which still struggles with its 30 frames per second cap.

A big part of this will be down to the fact that Blackout currently supports up to 80 players on a single map, which was a technical challenge for those behind the Call of Duty engine.

KitGuru Says: I imagine anyone with an up to date gaming PC won't have to worry much about frame rate in Blackout but those with a base Xbox One or PS4 may see a performance hit. That's just my guess though, it will be interesting to see some analysis once the Blackout beta lands in a few days time.
