EDGE challenges the racing seat style with its “truly ergonomic” GX1 Gaming Chair

The term ‘gaming chair’ has become synonymous with the racing seat style over the years, but the ergonomic value of such design has consistently been challenged. Now, British gaming brand EDGE has introduced its premium, hand-crafted GX1 Gaming Chair to disrupt the market, designed by Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist experts.

EDGE’s Technical Director, Clyde Crawford explains that the concept of gaming chairs should be based on comfort and freedom of movement for the user, making the racing style “fundamentally flawed for gamers.” The “bucket seat” is built to restrict lateral movement for drivers under the intense pressure of racing, with support primarily focusing on the shoulders to keep physical composure.

“This contrasts with the needs of gamers, who require free movement of their arms and shoulders, and need to be properly supported in upright and engaged, forward leaning positions, as well as more relaxed positions,” said Crawford.

Based on this knowledge, EDGE set out to design the GX1 alongside experts to provide better support for gamers. While many of the features sound the same as other premium brands on the market, including cushioned 4D armrests and a reclining back, there’s much more to the GX1. The Height is adjustable from anywhere between 480mm and 590mm, while the seat base can slide independently with a depth adjustability of 65mm.

A more unique feature of the GX1 is its “decompression zone,” built to alleviate pressure on the coccyx, otherwise known as the tail bone. Its “gravity-driven asymmetric tilt mechanism” is designed to give extra control over the tension of the chair, allowing the user to transition comfortably between different postures while sitting.

Of course, the GX1 sounds fancy enough, but does it truly offer the comfort EDGE is promising? Streamers Connected founder Lt Zonda seems to thinks so, praising the numerous features in a comment to KitGuru. In particular, Zonda highlights EDGE’s unique “inflatable” lumbar support that can be customised with precision to the user’s liking.

“It’s been a massive improvement for my back. Before, I had a noblechairs which was probably the comfiest gaming chair I’ve ever owned – I loved it and it’s been really, really good for these past few years – but in the last few years, I’ve had such a bad back. Since I’ve been using my EDGE GX1, it’s helped my back feel so much better, I can sit and stream for hours.”

EDGE’s GX1 Gaming Chair comes in a unique polyurethane, polyester and cotton, designed to give an extra degree of breathability and durability. Due to the nature of each chair being hand-built from the ground up, prices start from £809.99 with a 5-year warranty.

KitGuru Says: While the price certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, it does sound like an awful lot of care goes into the design and craft of EDGE’s latest product. Does the GX1 Gaming Chair catch your eye? How do you think its look stacks up with competition already on the market?
