Netflix still plans to produce Stranger Things game after Telltale’s closure

Telltale Games might be shutting down but that hasn't deterred Netflix's ambitions for a game based on Stranger Things. Before the closure was announced, Telltale was supposed to take the project on for Netflix, in addition to Minecraft: Story Mode. While Telltale will no longer be able to fulfill the role, Netflix has confirmed that it is pursuing other options.

As part of Telltale's closure, over 200 employees were let go on the spot and almost all current projects were canceled, including The Wolf Among Us 2, The situation has also cast doubt on whether or not The Walking Dead: Final Season will be finished. In the meantime, a skeleton crew of around 25 employees will be finishing up  Minecraft: Story Mode for Netflix.

As for Stranger Things, the project might now be further away than originally planned, but a game based on the hit series will see the light of day at some point.

Speaking with Polygon, a Netflix spokesperson said: “We are saddened by news about Telltale Games. They developed many great games in the past and left an indelible mark in the industry. Minecraft: Story Mode is still moving forward as planned. We are in the process of evaluating other options for bringing the Stranger Things universe to life in an interactive medium.”

There is no word yet on who might take on the project now but we'll keep an eye out for any updates on that front.

KitGuru Says: This whole Telltale situation has been a bit of a mess. The company was still hiring new employees up until a week ago, The Walking Dead: Final Season just launched its first episode and other fan requested games were in the works. From the outside looking in, the studio seemed to be in fine shape. Who do you think should fill the void left by Telltale? I wouldn't be surprised if the team behind Life is Strange took on the mantle.
