Dreams’ live curation to end as game officially loses all support

A little under a year ago, Media Molecule announced that they would be ceasing support for their inventive game-creation toolset known as Dreams, with no updates planned for the future. The game is now taking a further step into its grave, with live curation support soon set to end.

In the wake of Sony’s recent spree of lay-offs, it seems as though Dream’s end-of-life has been accelerated, with the team taking to their blog to say:

“Back in September, before the news of our consultation processes, the Community Team outlined plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams. While the impact to our team means we will be unable to deliver on all the promises outlined in that blog post, such as The Impsider editorial, we will be continuing our streams and supporting the Dreams Community via social channels.”

The bad news doesn’t stop there however, with them continuing: “Unfortunately, in Spring 2024, we will be saying goodbye to the last Molecules who were affected by the consultation process – our Curation Team” adding that “While live support for DreamSurfing and DreamShaping will end in mid-April, this will coincide with the launch of new playlists alongside spotlighting the Dreams Recommender playlist providing tip-top recommendations based on what you’ve recently played in Dreams.”

It seems as though for the rest of its life, Dream’s recommendations will be curated by this algorithm.

While all of this spells bad news, Media Molecule did assure fans that “there are currently no plans to take Dreams offline, restricting access to the thousands upon thousands of amazing creations brought to life by all of our fabulous creators.”

While a small silver lining in all this, it is a shame to see that Dreams will forever have failed to reach its lofty ambitions.
