Much like Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched exclusively on PS5 with a performance mode that included just a few too many visual trade-offs. Fortunately, Square Enix has been working on it since the game's launch last month and now, a new update aims to make the game's performance mode much sharper.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's performance mode doesn't dip quite as low on the resolution scale as Final Fantasy 16, but it is still notably soft in some areas. Today, a new update is rolling out to address exactly that, presenting two new options for performance mode users – Sharp and Soft. The Soft preset will use the same settings already in the game, while the sharp setting will bring a boost to resolution. This may mean that sections of the game that already struggle to maintain 60FPS will dip lower, but we'll have to spend some time testing it to know for sure.
The new 1.020 patch for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also brings a number of other bug fixes, graphical improvements and QoL changes, including:
- Fixes to missing or incorrect characters in some parts of the game text.
- Fixes to player character bugs that occur in field areas under certain conditions.
- Fixes to Red XIII’s abilities “Supernal Fervor” and “Watcher's Spirit” in battle, as these were easily cancelled.
- Fixes to bugs occurring in battle under specific conditions that would cause enemies to freeze.
- Fixes to bugs triggered by specific conditions that affect progress through quests.
- Improvements to frame rate and overall game stability.
- Addition of a “sharp” or “soft” option for graphical output in Performance Mode.
- Improvements to graphical quality.
- Reflected reversed camera controls while controlling a gliding sky chocobo.
- Reflected reversed camera controls in the sharpshooting minigame.
- Emphasised the path along the climbable vines in the Mythril Mine.
- Added difficulty selection to the customisation screen of the minigames Fort Condor and Gears and Gambits.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth first launched on the 29th of February, exclusively for PS5. The game will be coming to PC eventually, hopefully at a quicker pace than its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which took almost two years to arrive. First though, Square Enix needs to get last year's major Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XVI, to PC, with a port now in the ‘final stages' of development.

KitGuru Says: I've started Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth but my addiction to Helldivers 2 has been keeping me from making much progress. Have many of you made much progress in the game so far? Or are you holding out for the eventual PC release?
