Intel Battlemage GPUs expected to release before Black Friday 2024

Intel Arc Alchemist was released over two years ago. Even so, Intel is still making new products based on the technology. At Embedded World 2024, the company announced six new GPUs designed for edge and embedded applications. While the new Alchemist GPUs have garnered significant attention, they may be the last to use this architecture, as its successor, Battlemage, is expected to be released later this year.

Battlemage is Intel's next-generation GPU architecture, also known as Xe2-HPG for discrete graphics or Xe2-LPG for integrated graphics. Intel has not provided many details about these GPUs yet, however, those attending EmbeddedWorld this week have begun hearing chatter about Battlemage amongst industry folks.

According to ComputerBase (via Andreas Schilling), Intel partners at the trade show hinted that Battlemage's release is aimed for this Autumn, before Black Friday, which falls on November 29th. Based on this claim, the release will occur between late September and November.

Intel has been relatively tight-lipped about Battlemage, stating that the project is on track and emphasising the team's focus on software development rather than hardware. Intel Fellow Tom Petersen has also mentioned that the focus is now on Celestial, the architecture that would supersede Battlemage. The article notes that Intel is taking a different approach to promoting its Arc GPUs. Instead of creating hype and claiming multiple release dates, the company only communicates what is necessary. Hopefully, this strategy will pay off by surprising enthusiasts with a competitive architecture.
