Leo Says Ep. 29 – Leo talks CPU reviews!

After working hard on the i9-9900K launch review, today our grumpy hero is back with another episode of Leo Says. Understandably a lot of the discussion centres on Intel's latest mainstream CPU, particularly in regards to its seemingly ridiculous 95W TDP, but Leo also discusses how to best review CPUs in a broader sense. There's also news of EK's CryoFuel Solid coolant – you can bet Leo has his eye on that – along with an update to the Supermicro spying story, and then … Nick Clegg joins Facebook?

00:15 Introduction
00:27 EK CryoFuel Solid coolant has arrived in seven colours
01:00 Intel 9th Gen and reviews of Core i9-9900K
01:57 Some reviews have lower performance due to reduced power delivery.
03:31 The 95W TDP looks ridiculous
04:39 Anandtech also had trouble with ASRock Z370 running at high voltage
06:27 Comparing CPUs is difficult!
08:31 Should we switch between DX11 and DX12 to get the best results?
11:12 AMD gives details of 12 core 2920X and 24 Core 2970WX – October 29th
12:53 Bloomberg’s story about Supermicro
15:54 Sir Nick Clegg will join Facebook in California in January – vice president

Leos Notes:

Some reviews have lower performance due to reduced power delivery.

The 95W TDP looks ridiculous.

Anandtech also had trouble with ASRock Z370 running at high voltage. HERE

Notice: When we initially posted this page, we ran numbers with an ASRock Z370 board. We have since discovered that the voltage applied by the board was super high,

Comparing CPUs is difficult!
Should I use an RTX 2080 graphics card with a Sandy Bridge Core i7?

Should we switch between DX11 and DX12 to get the best results?
AMD gives details of the 24-core Threadripper 2970WX (US$1299) and 12-core 2920X (US$649) which will be available on 29th October

At present you can choose between Local Mode and Distributed Mode, and 29th October AMD Ryzen Master will add Dynamic Local Mode for Threadripper 2970WX and 2990WX CPUs to automatically migrate the system’s most demanding application threads onto the cores with local memory access. In other words: the apps that prefer local DRAM access will automatically receive it, and apps that scale to many cores will be free to do so. MORE

Bloomberg’s story about Supermicro has been denied by absolutely everyone and there seems to be no hard evidence to back it up.

Furthermore the tiny chips they showed in a photo appear innocuous and might be for power conditioning.

Sir Nick Clegg will join Facebook in California in January as their Vice-President of Global Affairs and Communications on a reported salary of £1 million a year.

He served five years as an MEP and 12 years as an MP.
