Red Dead Redemption 2 sleuths uncover more hints of a potential PC version

Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 finally graced players on Friday after a number of delays, paired with an official companion application for easier navigation over the map and character stats. While designed to connect to both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game, sleuths have uncovered multiple references within the app that suggest a PC version might be on its way.

With the renowned Red Dead Redemption noticeably absent on PC since its 2010 release, fans have been clamouring to change that for the newly release sequel. Fortunately, there now seems to be evidence that Red Dead Redemption 2 will get a PC version thanks to lines of code deep within the files of its companion app, as discovered by BlackScout and RockstarIntel:

  • PARAM_FrameLimit
  • PARAM_HDStreamingInFlight – Present in GTA V (PC)
  • PARAM_Oculus
  • PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC
  • PARAM_singleThreadedRenderer
  • PostFX::g_CheckerBoardEnable
  • CommandIsPcVersion(void) 000000000166A12C

Some suspect that the references could point to a desktop version of the companion app rather than a PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Conversely, mention of graphical options including anti-aliasing, shadow and particle quality suggest that there might be a year or two in between console and potential PC releases similar to Rockstar’s other superhit – Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V).

This is just the latest in a long line of rumours to bring the Red Dead series to the PC platform, following a programmer’s LinkedIn profile and suggestions that a remaster of Red Dead Redemption was also in the works for current generation platforms. Like previous rumours, this latest leak isn’t concrete and should be taken with a pinch of salt until Rockstar officially announce its plans for the series.

KitGuru Says: The more information that comes to light about a potential PC port of Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, the more I feel like a horse with a carrot chasing a dangling carrot. Hopefully there is some truth to the rumours and we’ll find confirmation soon. Perhaps a silly question, but do you want to see Red Dead on PC?
