Titanfall 3 and Jedi: Fallen Order could both launch next year

EA doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to certain series, cancelling numerous Star Wars games and putting Titanfall 2 between a rock and a hard place. Fortunately, more is yet to come as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Titanfall 3 could both launch next year.

During its second quarter earnings call, EA released prepared remarks that detailed multiple titles on the way for the latter half of 2019. Some of these include “games from Respawn that are slated to launch by next holiday season,” explains CEO Andrew Wilson. And yes, ‘games’ is plural.

Since EA acquired the company in 2017, Respawn Entertainment has officially been working on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It’s entirely possible this could be one of the games foreshadowed for 2019’s Holiday launch, after Wilson revealed a tentative release window to be the fiscal year of 2020. While executive Blake J. Jorgensen emphasises that this isn’t necessarily literal confirmation, it does indicate a release anywhere between October 1st, 2019 and September 30th, 2020.

Respawn also confirmed that it is working on an undisclosed virtual reality title for the Oculus Rift. Details on this project are few and far between, with Respawn simply describing realistic wartime combat. This is similarly scheduled for 2019, but little has been heard since its reveal during 2017’s Oculus Connect event.

This could very well fulfil the definition of “games” pegged for 2019’s holiday season, but there is one elephant that sits in the room – Titanfall 3. It’s well recognised that Titanfall 2’s sales suffered due to its release date being sandwiched between Call of Duty and EA’s own Battlefield. Although many feared for the series’ future, the publisher’s acquisition of Respawn brought with it the announcement that a new mainline entry was on its way.

Of course, it could just as easily be a brand new unannounced IP if more games are to accompany Star Wars and the upcoming VR project. Still, there would be many happy gamers if Titanfall was to return as early as next year.

KitGuru Says: Fast-paced shooters have never really been my style, but Titanfall did capture me like no other. While I’d love to see the series reappear with a new entry, Respawn’s effort on Star Wars still has me intrigued more than anything else. Are you excited for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, or a potential Titanfall 3?
