Rumour: Valve working on a Half-Life 2 prequel for VR

We've known for a while now that Gabe Newell looks up to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and his ability to develop games alongside hardware. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Valve is working on its own virtual reality titles to fully take advantage of upcoming hardware like the Knuckles controllers. Over the weekend, the rumour mill began to spin once again and this time around, signs are pointing towards Half-Life finally making a return.

Over the last couple of years, various datamining efforts have uncovered references to something known as ‘HLVR'. We know that Valve has three VR games in the works, at least two of which will run on the Source 2 engine. According to Valve News Network, Valve's own VR headset is deep in development at this point and when it eventually launches, it will be bundled with a game. That game is rumoured to be Half-Life: VR Story and it is said to be a prequel to the events of Half-Life 2.

This would be a big deal for a number of reasons, not only would Half-Life make its long awaited return but it would also be a big push for the Source 2 engine. Once Source 2 development tools start rolling out, which will be great for modders and those looking to create their own games using a new and improved Source engine.

Obviously, Valve-time is a real thing, so even if all of this is all legitimate information, it could still be a few years before we see any of it come to fruition.

KitGuru Says: The idea of Valve releasing its own VR headset, controllers and a big game to accompany all of it, is incredibly exciting. We are still in heavy rumour territory at this point but with Artifact finally coming out this month, we'll hopefully see Valve ramp up its other projects in 2019.
