Sea of Thieves surpasses 40 million players ahead of PS5 launch

While many bemoan the current output of Rare Studios, the company has been incredibly successful with Sea of Thieves. It might not be grabbing headlines quite like Destiny, but Sea of Thieves continues to thrive. Since 2020, the player base has more than doubled, and the game is about to welcome in a whole new wave of players.

Ahead of the game's launch on PS5 later this month, Rare has now confirmed that Sea of Thieves has surpassed 40 million players across all platforms. The game first launched in 2018, and had amassed 15 million players by 2020. The game has only grown since then, with continued updates bringing in millions of additional players on Xbox and PC.

This is good news to share right now, as Sea of Thieves is about to become available on PlayStation for the first time. This means Rare may potentially see another huge boost in growth – given the disappointing release of Skull & Bones this year, Rare doesn't have much competition in the multiplayer pirate-adventure space.

Rare has plans to continue supporting Sea of Thieves for years to come as well. Season 12 is just around the corner at this stage, so we should expect plenty more content throughout the year.

KitGuru Says: Rare has slowly worked away on Sea of Thieves and at this point, it is one of the best multiplayer co-op games. If you just want to adventure and uncover treasure with your friends, you can do that, but if you'd rather get into some skirmishes, PvP is also baked in.
