Resident Evil 9 may see the series go open-world

While Capcom did a great job keeping things quiet for the unveiling of Resident Evil 7, since then, there have been numerous leaks that have spoiled elements of Resident Evil Village, as well as the Remakes, including RE2, RE3 and RE4. The latest leaks are now beginning to swirl, focusing on Resident Evil 9, which may see the series make the jump to an open world map.

Dusk Golem, a leaker who has specialised in Capcom projects, particularly the Resident Evil series, has now claimed that Resident Evil 9 will feature some significant changes, including an open world map.

The newer Resident Evil games haven't been particularly linear. The most recent mainline games in the series have offered large, open maps, with plenty of backtracking and shortcuts involved, connecting all the areas together. Resident Evil Village had the biggest explorable area to date, so it sounds like Resident Evil 9 will take things a step further in this regard.

While the game may end up featuring a larger, open map, Dusk Golem does also reassure fans that Capcom has tasked its development teams with retaining the DNA of its franchises, so despite any changes, Resident Evil 9 should still look and feel like it belongs in the series. The same can be said for Dragon's Dogma 2 and next year's Monster Hunter Wilds.

We don't have a release date, or even an official title for Resident Evil 9. It has been around a year since Resident Evil 4 Remake landed, so perhaps we'll see a teaser for the next major Resident Evil game before the end of the year.

KitGuru Says: I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this, but if the open world takes inspiration from games like Elden Ring, and avoids the pitfalls that make so many other open-world games feel cookie-cutter, then Resident Evil 9 could be set to impress.
