Red Dead Redemption 2 might be VR compatible on PC

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now out in the wild and the game is gathering critical acclaim across the board. However, many of us are still waiting on a PC version. New evidence of a PC version surfaced over the weekend thanks to sleuths digging through code. However, what is perhaps more interesting is the fact that there is a reference to Oculus, suggesting future VR support.

Rockstar has been quick to experiment with virtual reality, having released LA Noire: Case Files late last year. However, it seems that the studio might not be done just yet. People have been digging through code found in Red Dead Redemption 2's companion app, finding the following PC-specific strings:

  • CommandIsPcVersion(void) 000000000166A12C
  • PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC 0000000002F985B8
  • SIGNIN_PC_APP_URL 0000000002A51F58
  • PARAM_HDStreamingInFlight – Present in GTA V (PC)
  • PARAM_singleThreadedRenderer
  • PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC

In addition to that, this reference was found: PARAM_Oculus 0000000002F7FC10.

With Oculus being specifically referenced, it would seem that Rockstar is experimenting with the idea of bringing VR support to Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. The game would likely struggle on PSVR but on a PC, players will have access to much more powerful hardware. Red Dead Redemption 2 also ships with a first-person mode right out of the box too, so it could be easier to get working for virtual reality.

If this does eventually end up happening, then Rockstar would be joining the likes of Bethesda in supporting Triple A gaming on VR headsets. Bethesda has previously released the full versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim for VR.

KitGuru Says: I played a bunch of Red Dead Redemption 2 over the weekend and the game is fantastic. If Rockstar could get it working in VR, then it would immediately become the best game available by far. Would you guys like to see Red Dead Redemption 2 ship with VR support on PC?
